SOUTH CHINA SEA:

  • The U.S. has slapped new restrictions on certain Chinese state-owned enterprises and executives for “malign activities” in the South China Sea, effectively starting a war on the Belt and Road Initiative of China.

PAKISTAN:

  • China and Pakistan agreed to accelerate the Belt and Road Initiative. Pakistan approved the Main Line-1 project involving the upgrade of the railway track between Karachi and Peshawar — one project under the CPEC (landmark project of the BRI between Pakistan and China).

  • Maldives has become a focal point for India and China in the wake of China’s Belt and Road Initiative aimed at improving trade and transport links. Maldives borrowed heavily from Beijing and contracted Chinese firms for infrastructure projects. Recently, India pledged $500 million towards funding a project in the Maldives to help the island nation connect its capital to three nearby islands.

IRAN:

  • It ensures that the agreement announced recently between China and Iran – total invest of $400bn in transport and development, that includes Iran in Belt and Road Initiative framework- includes plans for China to develop several ports in Iran, such as the Bandar-e-Jask which is strategically situated to the east of the Strait of Hormoz, giving Beijing control over one of the seven key maritime chokepoints in the world. It would also allow China a presence in Gwadar and Djibouti ports, allowing presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
