  • AFGHANISTAN: Trump to Order Further Drawdown of Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. NATO warns against the pullout, saying “Afghanistan risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands. ISIS could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it lost in Syria and Iraq.” Al Qaeda will now be given time and space to regroup in Afghanistan for the next attack.

  • PAKISTAN: India and the US reiterated in a joint statement their call for Pakistan to take irreversible action to ensure its territory isn’t used for terror attacks. They denounced the use of terrorist proxies and strongly condemned cross-border terrorism in all its forms. The joint statement also called for “concerted action” against terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda, Islamic State and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

  • INDIA: India’s internal security service arrested nine operatives (all Indian citizens, Muslim immigrants who lived in the past in Pakistan) from Al-Qaeda who were preparing to carry out attacks on infrastructure and officers of the Indian Navy. They were getting instructions from a Pakistan-based terror cell, according to the Indian security service.   Al-Qaeda is operating on a wide scale in India and is trying to establish terror cells inside the country.

Assaults/Attacks (Somalia)

ASSAULTS/ATTACKS:

  • SOMALIA: Five Islamic extremists stormed the Elite Hotel (often frequented by politicians, journalists, civil society activists) in the Lido beach area of Mogadishu. Ten people were dead and five militants were killed, after Somalia’s security forces have put an end to the attack. Somalia’s homegrown Islamic extremist rebels, al-Shabab, who are allied to al-Qaida, have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Warnings (Nigeria)

WARNINGS:

  • NIGERIA: United States has warned that ISIS and al-Qaida are penetrating Northwest and looking to expand further south into the littoral areas of Nigeria. Since it began about ten years ago, violent extremism has been largely confined to the north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa. Its move southwards could see states like Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna, at risk of terrorist attacks.
