  • SAUDI ARABIA: Bombing against a gathering of Western diplomats (see GNN Terrorism November) was claimed by the Islamic State. The attacks, which underscore Muslim fury over French satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, come as Saudi Arabia prepares for the G20 leaders’ summit later this month — the first to be hosted by an Arab nation.

  • SAUDI ARABIA: A bomb blast hit a World War I commemoration ceremony attended by Western diplomats in Saudi Arabia’s port city of Jeddah, injuring at least two people, the second attack in two weeks targeting foreign missions in the kingdom. There was no official word on the perpetrator’s identity or motive, but the attack appeared to target French diplomats and military officials in attendance.

  • AFGHANISTAN: The attack in Kabul University (see GGN November 2020) was the second attack on an educational institution in the capital in just over a week. Both have been claimed by Islamic State. Some Afghan government officials have accused the Taliban of involvement (the Taliban are holding talks with the aim of brokering a peace deal).

  • AFGHANISTAN: At least 19 people were killed and 22 wounded when militants stormed Afghanistan’s biggest university in an attack that ended only after hours of fighting with security forces. The attack started when government officials were arriving for the opening of an Iranian book fair organised at the campus.

  • FRANCE: The French government has raised the national security alert system to its highest level following the attack inside the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice (among other cases of violence). The man suspected of the attack is a 21-year-old Tunisian. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

  • PAKISTAN: Pakistani militants opposing Belt and Road attacked a convoy escorting staffers of the Oil and Gas Development Co. Ltd. (OGDCL), who had been carrying out a seismic survey to discover gas in Gwadar block. 14 security men were killed.  Baloch Raji Ajoi Sangar, an alliance of militant ethnic Baloch separatist groups, claimed responsibility for the attack.
