WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOECONOMICS? ASIA PACIFIC:

CHINA-AUSTRALIA DIPLOMATIC RIFT:

  • Chinese investment in Australia plummeted 61% in 2020, the lowest number in six years. The drop in investment comes amid a growing diplomatic rift between the two countries, since Australia first called for a rigorous investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic and in response China has imposed tariffs or trading restrictions on Australian goods.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOECONOMICS? SOUTH ASIA:

INDIA-CHINA VACCINE DIPLOMACY:

  • India and China -that have disengaged frontline troops from their borders, putting an end to tensions in the region- have shifted their rivalries to a different field – seeking political influence through vaccine diplomacy. Since India produces 60% of global vaccines, it is trying to match China to use it as a diplomatic tool to expand influence in the neighborhood and beyond. The COVID-19 vaccine has emerged as an important form of diplomatic currency globally for the nations to showcase their soft power gains.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOPOLITICS? ASIA PACIFIC:

CHINA´S DFENCE SPENDING:

  • China is expected to reveal a robust increase in defence spending, as its economy rebounds from the COVID-19 pandemic and military tensions rise, Chinese and Western security experts said.  The new administration of President Joe Biden has moved quickly to remind Beijing that the United States intends to compete with China’s growing influence and military strength in the Asia-Pacific. In recent weeks, powerful U.S. warship fleets have sailed near Chinese-claimed Taiwan and through disputed territory in the South China Sea, to Beijing’s anger.

MIDDLE EAST:

  • The head of the US military’s Central Command warned that the United States faced greater competition in the Middle East from both China and Russia, adding another layer of geopolitical tension to the already volatile region. He said Beijing and Moscow had taken advantage of factors (an ongoing regional crisis; financial infrastructure needs; perception of declining US engagement; and opportunities created by Covid-19) to raise their influence in the region over the past year.

ASIA PACIFIC:

CHINA:

  • Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, beat Russia, maintaining its ranking as China’s largest crude supplier in 2020. Russia came in second place as China oil supplier. China’s demand for oil remained strong last year despite the COVID-19 pandemic which caused reduced demand for fuel elsewhere. China is the world’s largest oil importer.

EURASIA:

  • Azerbaijan’s ties with Russia, already strained by conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, face further pressure from the launch -later this year- of a gas pipeline (the $40 billion Southern Gas Corridor will draw from Azerbaijan’s giant Shah Deniz II field in the Caspian Sea) that is poised to squeeze Moscow’s diminished gas sales to Europe and Turkey. Currently Russia’s economy suffers because of the impact on oil and gas demand of the COVID-19 pandemic.
