Attendees will also discuss ongoing issues with China as well as the unfolding conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

  • The European Union took legal action against Britain over its plans to pass legislation that would breach parts of the legally binding divorce agreement the two sides reached late last year. The EU action underscored the worsening relations with Britain, which was a member of the bloc until Jan 31.

  • BELARUS: Russia issued strong support for beleaguered Belarusian President Lukashenko following weeks of opposition protests. The EU, for its part, is so far unable to formulate a proposal for Belarus. Right now, the EU is weakened by Brexit and the new coronavirus pandemic, and has even fewer opportunities to punish Russia or reward protesting Belarus. The latest of three huge protest marches was held at the weekend with more than 100,000 people attending.

  • BELARUS: Anti-government protests in Belarus showed no signs of fading Friday, five days after President Lukashenko claimed victory in what the country’s opposition, the European Union and the United States have called an unfair election.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA REGION:

  • Israel ratified the agreement – with Greece and Cyprus– of the EastMed pipeline, set to export gas to the EU. However, the Jewish state will need to overcome a number of challenges, including Turkey’s opposition to the project and a legal battle with Lebanon over the maritime borders. Ankara has long objected to the EastMed deal.
