South Asia

SOUTH ASIA:

  • India rejected a map redrawn by Pakistan showing Indian territories of Kashmir and parts of Gujarat as part of its own land. Pakistan is seen to have been emboldened to take such a step after recent Chinese incursions into Indian territories in Ladakh, the resulting skirmishes between troops of the two sides and the present stalemate.

ASIA PACIFIC:

  • Philippine has abruptly banned his naval forces from participating in joint maritime exercises with the United States and others in the South China Sea, a move which could undermine Washington’s bid to build an anti-China bulwark of like-minded allies in the contested waterway. Previously, the Beijing-friendly Duterte tried to improve relations with China by downgrading his government’s maritime cooperation with the US.

East Asia

EAST ASIA:

  • The Five Eyes alliance – made up of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – is considering expanding its membership to include Japan. Japan’s willingness to join the bloc is based on its mistrust of China. China-Japan relations have already been put in crisis after Japan’s involvement in the Group of Seven over the national security law for Hong Kong.

EUROPE

EUROPE:

  • The United States would move its military headquarters out of Germany to Belgium, as part of the US plan to cut the number of US troops in Germany to 25,000. Some of the military personnel in Germany will be moved to other NATO countries. The key aim of the rotation is to reinforce NATO’s southeastern flank near the Black Sea, sending a message to Russia.

SOUTH ASIA:

  • Indian Navy has deployed almost its entire fleet of ships and submarines into the Indian Ocean. The moves are likely a clear signal to China: that India will not back down, either on land or sea. Furthermore, the move suggests that India is tightening its grip on the crucial Malacca Strait, a development that will surely set off alarm bells in Beijing.
