U.K.’s Biggest Naval Fleet in Decades to Flex Muscle With Eye on China and U.S. | SOURCE: WALL STREET JOURNAL

The most powerful U.K. fleet to be assembled in decades is preparing to set sail this month on a tour of 40 countries, focused on the Indo-Pacific, in an effort to show British military muscle in a region where the U.S. is seeking to counter Chinese influence.

  • The Pentagon recently asked Congress for an astronomical $27 billion budget increase to support a massive military buildup in Asia as part of its new Indo-Pacific plan, which calls for a substantially more aggressive military stance against China. The US already have more than 290 military bases in the Asia-Pacific region alone.

  • Germany announced a set of Indo-Pacific policy guidelines, to allow Germany to make “an active contribution to shaping the international order in the Indo-Pacific.”  Germany recognizes that the growing strategic uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific—due both to China’s increasing assertiveness in the region and the American push back that this has engendered—is likely to have direct impact on Germany’s future prosperity and security.

  • India announced that it will not participate in the Kavkaz-2020 military exercise to be held under the aegis of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) — a Eurasian multilateral grouping led by China and Russia, which also has Pakistan as a member – in southern Russia.  India’s decision once again brings to question why India decided to join the SCO as it deepens its strategic relationship with the United States and allied powers in the Indo-Pacific.
