  • SAUDI ARABIA: Bombing against a gathering of Western diplomats (see GNN Terrorism November) was claimed by the Islamic State. The attacks, which underscore Muslim fury over French satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, come as Saudi Arabia prepares for the G20 leaders’ summit later this month — the first to be hosted by an Arab nation.

  • AFGHANISTAN: The attack in Kabul University (see GGN November 2020) was the second attack on an educational institution in the capital in just over a week. Both have been claimed by Islamic State. Some Afghan government officials have accused the Taliban of involvement (the Taliban are holding talks with the aim of brokering a peace deal).

  • PAKISTAN: India and the US reiterated in a joint statement their call for Pakistan to take irreversible action to ensure its territory isn’t used for terror attacks. They denounced the use of terrorist proxies and strongly condemned cross-border terrorism in all its forms. The joint statement also called for “concerted action” against terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda, Islamic State and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

  • IRAQ: Security experts and strategists said that ISIS was trying to regain power in Iraq, trying to expand its operations. Meanwhile, the Iraqi security forces launched a military operation to pursue ISIS cells in various areas to the west of the country, including Kanous Island, one of ISIS’ strongholds.

  • Daesh has urged its followers to target Saudi Arabia’s oil pipelines and factories in a statement denouncing Riyadh of being complicit in the normalisation of relations between the UAE and Bahrain, and Israel through the so-called Abraham Accords, seen by Daesh as a betrayal of Islam.

  • Islamic State and groups linked to it are seeking to recoup ground in the Sahel, exploiting the crisis those governments are facing with combating the coronavirus while having to cope with the impact of collapsed oil prices. In the Sahel, ISIL is believed to be expanding its bases in parts of Mali, Mauritania, Chad, Niger, Central African Republic, Nigeria, and even Algeria. Recently number of these countries appealed to the UN for international assistance.

  • MOZAMBIQUE: A growing Islamist insurgency in northern Mozambique entered its fourth year this week, with experts saying there is no end in sight. Since the first attack in 2017 by al-Shabab (considered the Mozambique affiliate of Islamic State) in the province of Cabo Delgado, rich in gas resources, militants have taken control of territory in the northern province, including a strategic port. More than 2,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict, with at least 600 attacks across the restive province.

  • AFGHANISTAN: Daesh’s Afghanistan wing – the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) – and al-Qaeda have been making efforts to establish a caliphate in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan, a strategic province as it borders Pakistan, China and Tajikistan. Since its inception in 2014-15, the ISKP has been expanding in size and been receiving a direct influx of fighters and patronage from Syria. Additionally, many Afghan Taliban who opposed the idea of negotiations with the United States have also joined ISKP.

  • MOROCCO: The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation dismantled a terrorist cell with suspected links to ISIS, and foiled its imminent plots. The head of the terrorist cell had planned to carry out terrorist operations targeting several facilities and sensitive sites, using explosive devices and belts.

  • United States has decided to reduce troop in Iraq from about 5,200 to 3,000 troops during September. They assured that Iraq local forces alone can prevent the Islamic State from returning. Trump is also set to announce further troop withdrawals from Afghanistan in the coming days, in accordance with a bilateral agreement signed with the Taliban.
