  • Hong Kong’s electoral reform bill has been introduced in the city’s legislature, setting in motion changes that will give Beijing greater control over the process while reducing the number of directly elected representatives. The bill is part of efforts to rein in political protests and opposition in Hong Kong, which is part of China but has had a more liberal political system since the 1997 handover from Britain.

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be visiting India, at a time when the U.K. is seeking to recalibrate its strategic footprint and focusing on the Indo-Pacific following its exit from the European Union. News agency Reuters has noted Johnson’s office as stating that the Indo-Pacific “tilt” is part of a new Integrated Review of defense and strategic policy. It seemed that in the Johnson government’s mind there is a Britain’s return to the “east of Suez”, that must be matched with deeper ties with India. Another sources remarked that BRITAIN wants to expand its influence among countries in the Indo-Pacific region to try to moderate China’s global dominance.

SOUTH CHINA SEA: The US has sent the USS ‘John S. McCain’ past Chinese-controlled islands in the South China Sea as a show of strength in the first mission conducted since President Joe Biden took office. The warship had been carrying out operations in the region, having traveled through the Taiwan Strait, an area that divides mainland China and Taiwan.  The South China Sea has been the subject of an ongoing dispute between the West and Beijing, as China secures territory and built military installations on artificial land, which countries, like the US, have claimed is illegal.

SOUTH CHINA SEA: Two U.S. carriers conducted a military exercise in the South China Sea. The dual carrier operations come as Biden seeks to send a signal to both U.S. allies and China that the U.S. will continue to patrol the South China Sea, of which China claims more than 80%.

QUAD: US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to strengthen Indo-Pacific security through the Quad grouping of countries that is seen as a way to push back against China’s growing assertiveness in the region. Japan’s Sankei newspaper reported over the weekend that the leaders of the United States, Japan, India, and Australia (members of the Quad) plan to hold a summit, in a further tightening of ties between the four.

SOUTH KOREA: South Korea urges U.S. flexibility on sanctions to restart North Korea talks. The new administration of President Joe Biden has not announced any North Korea policy, but Seoul, keen to resuscitate stalled cross-border economic cooperation, has expressed hopes that Biden would restart negotiations with Pyongyang.

TURKEY-PAKISTAN: A joint military exercise involving Turkish and Pakistani special forces began. The joint military exercise will further strengthen the bond of two brotherly nations and will help in adapting the emerging trends in military modernization and cooperation, a statement said.

INDIAN OCEAN: Russian, Iranian, and Chinese naval drills will be held in the Indian Ocean in mid-February. A Zionist media outlet described it as a step by Iran to challenge the navies of some Western countries in the region. After the US-French naval alliance in the Persian Gulf, Iran intends to show its strength, the Zionist Jerusalem Post wrote in an analysis.

MYANMAR: Anti-coup protesters continue taking to the streets, calling for the release of arrested leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi. Meanwhile, Myanmar’s military rulers are blocking social media platforms, alleging they are being used to destabilize the country.

MYANMAR: The G7 Foreign Ministers and the High Representative of the European Union condemns coup in Myanmar. Meanwhile, China and Russia block UN Security Council condemnation of Myanmar coup. China, backed by Russia, shielded Myanmar from any significant council action after a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine State sent more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing into Bangladesh, where they are still stranded.

MYANMAR: President Biden has vowed to rally the United States’ partners to persuade Asian allies to support sanctions or moves to isolate Myanmar´s regime after military coup. They anticipate it will be no easy task. In Asia, there is a sense that two decades of sanctions in the 1990s and 2000s during Myanmar’s earlier period of military rule simply pushed the junta closer to China.

IRAQ: US forces are developing the Al-Harir base in northern Iraq despite a decision by the Iraqi parliament to expel foreign troops from the country, Iraqi sources reported. The military base has recently become the center of US operations management in neighboring areas of northern Syria.

YEMEN: President Joe Biden announced the United States was ending support for a grinding five-year Saudi-led military offensive in Yemen. The assurance is seen as part of an effort to persuade Saudi Arabia and other combatants to end the conflict overall. However, the ending of US support for the offensive will not affect any US operations against the Yemen-based al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

NORD STREAM 2: The US may be prepared to enter talks with Germany on easing its sanctions on Nord Stream 2. Biden administration may have resigned itself to the fact that the Russian pipeline will be completed. Washington has been an ardent opponent of Nord Stream 2, causing clashes with Germany and its other European allies that are anticipating economic gains from the project.
