- BELARUS: Tens of thousands of demonstrators rallied Sunday in the Belarusian capital of Minsk to begin the fourth week of daily protests demanding that the country’s authoritarian president resign (see also GGN Anti-Government protests August 2020).

- BELARUS: Security forces detained 300 protesters and journalists while taking part in demonstrations in central Minsk. The arrests came hours after Russian President Putin said he had formed a reserve group of law enforcement officers ready to be deployed in Belarus if “the situation gets out of control”. Belarusians have taken to the streets every day since the Aug. 9 vote in which President Alexander Lukashenko claimed a landslide victory.

- BELARUS: Belarus detained 33 alleged Russian mercenaries in Minsk accused of preparing a terrorist attack to destabilise the country ahead of its presidential elections in a sharp escalation of tensions with Moscow. Belarus has claimed the men are mercenaries employed by the Russian private military company Wagner, which has been tied to an ally of Putin and has fought in armed conflict in Ukraine, Syria and countries in Africa.
