  • China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a government spending bill that includes provisions about China’s Taiwan and Tibet Autonomous Region. The act will seriously disrupt and hurt China-U.S. relations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said.

  • REGIONAL: China is set to begin construction of a strategic railway line important for implementation of the Chinese plan for Tibet’s governance and the project’s role in securing China’s national unity and stability in the border areas. The rail project runs through Nyingchi, which lies just north of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, over which China lays claim to as part of South Tibet.

  • The United States has ordered China to close its Houston consulate. In retaliation, China is considering shutting down the US consulate in Wuhan. The Trump Administration has already ramped up pressure on China on a wide range of issues: imposing sanctions on Chinese officials over policies in Tibet and Xinjiang; downgraded relations with Hong Kong after China implemented a new security law; and declaring Beijing’s pursuit of territory and resources in the South China Sea as illegal.
